The VANSPEC Coordinator (Coordinator) oversees the Vancouver Special Education Catechism program in the Archdiocese. This includes working with the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) directors, Pastors and private-referral parents to provide individualized catechesis for children, teens and adults with Special Needs. With a special focus on Sacramental Preparation, the coordinator also coordinates on-going Faith Formation Programs for youth and adults with Special Needs.
Responsibilities
- Overseeing the daily operations of the VANSPEC program at the main centre, resourcing the other site centres, developing new site centres as required;
- Assessment of referrals to the VANSPEC program and determining suitability;
- Works cooperatively with PREP Coordinators (where applicable) to ensure the provision of services in line with VANSPEC principles;
- Conducting site-visits and periodic network meetings and training for site centre coordinators.
- Recruitment, training, and screening of all volunteers;
- Ensuring that all records for volunteers are complete, up-to-date, and filed per PIPA legislation;
- Confirming that all volunteers have been vetted according to Safe Environment policies and that their records are updated as per policy;
- Serving as the immediate supervisor to the VANSPEC Administrative Assistant;
- Along with the Administrative Assistant, ensuring that files are maintained for all students, especially Sacramental records, and that information is passed on to the Archdiocese in a timely manner;
- Maintaining connections to the network of VANSPEC Alumni.

Other Skills, Experience, Education and Training desired:
- Relevant Education;
- Practicing Catholic with a solid understanding of the faith;
- Experience working with Special Needs children is preferred (basic understanding of the types and causes of intellectual disabilities and a working knowledge of how to assist persons with these disabilities);
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of products, Outlook, and comfortable with internet use;
- Effective time management and organizational skills;
- Ability to work collaboratively;
- Good communication skills and ability to work well with others;
- Ability to recruit, train, and evaluate volunteers;
- Some experience in Supervision or Management is preferred;
- Access to a vehicle is preferred.
Working Environment
- Salary Range: $25 - $30,000
- Comprehensive benefits package offered including a pension plan;
- Must be able to meet the requirements of the Safe Environment policies as a condition of employment;
- Flexible hours, 20 hours per week;
- Must have access to a car and be willing & able to travel to VANSPEC centres, parishes, meetings, and schools;
- Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.
