Under the direction of the Archbishop’s Delegate of Operations, the General Manager (GM) is responsible for the concise and orderly, compassionate and caring oversight and supervision of all Catholic Charities Men’s Shelter staff and related operations and functions. The GM provides holistic leadership to a broad range of ever-changing, multi-function, community-based shelter programs in accordance with the mission of the Men’s Shelter. The incumbent must be an authentic ambassador of our mandate of “Providing shelter for men experiencing homelessness in the caring and compassionate spirit of Jesus Christ.”
Key Responsibilities
- Ensures ministry objectives are consistently accomplished and that the mission of the shelter is applied to all program initiatives;
- Recruits, trains, evaluates, recognizes, disciplines, and terminates in accordance with Policy and in collaboration with the Human Resources office;
- Works with the management team in the preparation of an operating budget for the shelter and monitors financial performance accordingly;
- In conjunction with the Operations Manager, the General Manager:
- Ensures adequate staffing;
- Authorizes vacations;
- Tracks attendance and absenteeism;
- Oversees replacement coverage for absences;
- Authorizes payroll, timesheets;
- Works with the Operations Manager and Human Resources Office to coordinate and track ongoing required sector training for all shelter staff;
- Collaborates with the Development Office and Finance Office to secure, monitor, report and track grants and application funding;
- Identifies workshops, training, and other opportunities with peer agencies for the staff and volunteers so they can provide optimum service to shelter guests;
- Ensures probationary and annual performance reviews are completed for all staff, following up on any emerging performance issues in a timely manner, when necessary, seeking the guidance of the Human Resources Office;
- Monitors staff safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards, and prepares, submits, and acts on incident reports in collaboration with the Operations Manager and Human Resources;
- Ensures logs, reports, case management data, and other statistics as needed are generated daily and submitted to the Archdiocese , BC Housing and any other agencies we are contractually obligated to;
- Engages in ongoing strategic planning to ensure programming reflects guests’ needs and contractual requirements;
- Develops, recommends, implements and enforces systems, policies and procedures for shelter services programs in consultation with senior management and frontline supervisors;
- Oversees tenant improvements related to Shelter Services;
- Represents Shelter Services, with community agencies, BC Housing, other municipal l level of government, social service agencies and other community stakeholders as directed;
- Networks with current local service providers and remain up to date with homelessness, housing, and poverty reduction issues in the local community.
Desired Skills and Experience
Qualifications:
- 5 years of progressive experience leading and managing a team;
- Knowledge & understanding of poverty issues, homelessness, addiction, health, mental health, and other related issues;
- Have the ability to communicate effectively, possess and exercise excellent interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution & de-escalation skills;
- Must demonstrate the ability to approach issues creatively and manage a variety of complex issues simultaneously;
- Must have a strong working knowledge of MS Office and data compilation;
Education:
- Post-secondary education in a related field would be an asset or a combination of progressive work experience or/& education;
- Knowledge/ experience in managing an operational budget.

- Schedule may vary depending on the needs of the Shelter; As a member of the leadership team you will be called upon during emergencies and/or staff absence;

- Salary range: $80,000 - $100, 000
