DECREE: Special Indulgence on the Occasion of the 250th Anniversary of the Birth of Saint Magdalene of Canossa, Founder of the Institutes of the Canossian Daughters and Sons of Charity


On March 1, 2024, the Institutes of the Canossian Daughers of Charity and the Canossian Sons of Charity celebrated the 250th anniversary of their founder, Saint Magdalene of Canossa. 

Upon receiving a request from the Canossian Sisters ministering in our local Church, to mark this special occasion I hereby declare that the Christian faithful of the Archdiocese of Vancouver may gain a Plenary Indulgence, within the period specified below, by fulfilling, in a spirit of total detachment from any inclination to sin, the general conditions of sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father, and the following specific requirements:

  1. Visiting Canadian Martyrs Parish in Richmond, BC, which is hereby declared the sanctuary for the exercise of the sacred functions required for this Indulgence; meditating in that church in reverence for an appropriate amount of time; and offering the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the following Prayer in Honour of Saint Mary Magdalene of Canossa:

    O God, Father of goodness, Who wanted to show your love to the humble and to the children
    by raising in your Church Saint Magdalene of Canossa
    as a servant of the poor,
    grant us to seek you above all things
    and to serve the poor and the little ones
    in a spirit of charity and humility.
    Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
    St. Magdalene of Canossa Pray for us.
    Mary, Mother of Charity at the Foot of the Cross.
    Pray for us.


  2. The Plenary Indulgence can be obtained for the benefit of the souls of the faithful in purgatory;

  3. The elderly, the sick and all those who for a grave cause cannot leave their homes, with the intention of fulfilling the usual conditions as soon as possible, and always in a spirit of detachment from any inclination to sin, can also obtain the Plenary Indulgence by offering their prayers and sufferings to God.

The conditions of Confession, Communion and prayer for the Pope’s intentions may be fulfilled some days before or after the performance of the prescribed work.

This Decree is effective from today, the Memorial of Saint John of Avila, May 10, 2024, to the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7, 2024.

Given at the Archdiocese of Vancouver, in the City of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on the Tenth day of May, in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty-Four.
