- Neither the father nor the mother of a candidate can be a sponsor for the Sacrament of Confirmation. (Code of Canon Law, c. 893; cf. c. 874 §1 5°)
- It is desirable that the godparent at Baptism, if available, also be the sponsor at Confirmation (c. 893 §2). This expresses more clearly the link between Baptism and Confirmation. Nonetheless, the choosing of a special Confirmation sponsor is not excluded.
- Sponsors must be at least sixteen (16) years old and Catholic (cf. c. 874 §3).
- The sponsor need not be of the same sex as the candidate.
