Primary Function of the Position

The Catholic Charities Men’s Shelter is looking for friendly and compassionate people who are deeply committed to making a difference in other people’s lives. Under the direction of the Shelter Manager, the Guest Attendant is responsible for the immediate care and needs of our guests with the intended aim of aiding in their transition from the streets to a permanent home.

Key Responsibilities

Working collaboratively with other Shelter staff, the Guest Attendant will:  

  • Engage with the guests and be available to listen and respond to their needs;
  • Participate in guest activities when arranged by Shelter Management;
  • Monitor the safety of the guests;
  • Complete general administrative tasks, including, but not limited to, responding to phone calls, entering data into the daily log, handing out toiletries, serving food and cleaning.
  • Complete a variety of other guest relations and administrative duties as assigned. 

Desired Skills and Experience

Education and Knowledge/ Training and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12/high-school diploma or equivalent;
  • Moderate knowledge of MS Office Suite and a general basic operational knowledge of office machinery;
  • Some knowledge and understanding of substance abuse, co-occurring problems and mental illness;
  • 1 year of experience working or volunteering with homeless support services or related outreach work in vulnerable population or in the hospitality industry considered an asset;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • A deep desire to serve the homeless in our community;
  • Superior conflict resolution and de-escalation skills;
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, respect confidentiality, serve patrons of all spiritual persuasions while embracing servant leadership.

Conditions of Employment

  • Casual position
  • Must be able to work afternoon or overnight shifts and willing to commit to a minimum of two shifts per week on an on-going basis;
  • Position is open to male and female applicants;
  • Must be aware and supportive of the Mission Statement of the Catholic Charities Men’s Shelter in the spirit of Jesus Christ and adhere to Archdiocesan Code of Ethics, including a willingness to respect Catholic and other multi-faith beliefs, as well as, a philosophy of compassionate service to others;
  • Must abide by the Archdiocesan Safe Environment Policy & Code of Conduct;
  • Must complete a successful Police Check with Vulnerable Sector Search prior to start of employment.

Working Environment 

  • Schedule will vary depending on the needs of Shelter with shifts between 3:30pm to 8:00am;
  • Likely to be in contact with people under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol;

Wage and Benefits

    Hourly rate: $25.95
