Where We Stand
Every day, health care decision-making becomes ethically more complex as new issues and technologies evolve – to name just three examples:
- New technologies and research require profound decision making
- The opioid crisis, a public health emergency, requires extraordinary measures
- Youth mental health is underserved and requires proactive responses
Catholic health care’s centuries long commitment to ethical discernment and the advocacy to the promotion of human dignity equips us with effective, caring and compassionate responses to these and other complexities.
Today, it is imperative that all our health care providers are educated in Catholic health care ethics in service of the whole person.
Providence Health Care and St. Mark’s College at UBC have united to address the need for enhanced ethics in Catholic health care in Vancouver. This initiative builds on the prophetic work of the Religious congregations that established Catholic health care here over 125 years ago. It is through this partnership that the Archdiocese of Vancouver seeks to foster Catholic health care ethics.
Your support of the 2019 Archbishop’s Dinner will help establish a Catholic Health Care Ethics Fund at the Archdiocese of Vancouver. This fund will provide resources to the partnership of Providence Health Care and St. Mark’s College at UBC for the ongoing healing and teaching ministries of Jesus Christ.
“As ‘guardians and servants of human life,’ health care workers need ongoing ethical formation.” – Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB
