Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It gives me great pleasure once again to reach out to all Asian Catholics in the Archdiocese of Vancouver and offer prayers and best wishes for a Happy New Year!

The Lunar New Year, which falls on February 5 in 2019, is a joyous opportunity for our Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and other Asian communities to gather with loved ones as they mark the Year of the Pig.  I understand that the personality traits traditionally associated with the Year of the Pig include faithfulness to friends and love of socializing.  May I suggest that this describes our Asian community appropriately, and I wish you every blessing as you get together to celebrate your cultural traditions with family and friends.

It has also become a custom for me to use this occasion to request that you keep in your prayers the ongoing meetings between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China as they work to better the relationship between them, reconcile the country’s Catholic communities, and work for respect for human and religious rights in China.

I pray that God will shower abundant blessings on you and your loved ones at this special time as well as throughout the coming year.

With cordial greetings and the assurance of my prayers, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

+J. Michael Miller, CSB
Archbishop of Vancouver
