Special Indulgence for the Bicentenary of the Birth of Saint Andrew Kim
The Catholic Bishop’s Conference of Korea has established a Jubilee Year to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon, the first Korean priest and the patron saint of Korean priests. The Jubilee will begin on November 29, 2020, and extend until November 27, 2021.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea has received a Decree from the Apostolic Penitentiary providing for a Plenary Indulgence, with general and specific conditions which may be gained by the faithful within the period of the Jubilee Year. In addition to the general conditions of sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father, four specific requirements are necessary to gain this Plenary Indulgence:
- Visiting a sanctuary or shrine designated by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea in the celebration of the Jubilee and participating in the Jubilee celebration or the special event(s);
- Meditating in reverence for an appropriate amount of time before a relic of Saint Andrew Kim, and offering the Our Father and the Creed followed by prayers addressing the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Andrew Kim;
- The Plenary Indulgence can be obtained in the manner of substitutionary prayer for the souls of the faithful in purgatory;
- The elderly, the sick and all those who for a grave cause cannot leave their homes, always in a spirit of detachment from any inclination to sin, with the intention of fulfilling the usual conditions as soon as possible, can also obtain the Plenary Indulgence by offering their prayers and sufferings before a statue or holy card of Saint Andrew Kim.
The conditions of Confession, Communion and prayer for the Pope’s intentions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the prescribed work.
Upon the request of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference, I designate Saint Andrew Kim Parish in Surrey, BC, as a Sanctuary for the exercise of the aforesaid sacred functions.
This Decree is effective from the First Sunday of Advent, November 29, 2020, to Our Lady’s Saturday, November 27, 2021.
