Special Needs Education
VanSpec, or Vancouver Special Education and Catechetical, offers Catholic catechetical instruction to children and adults who are challenged by intellectual disabilities or Specific Learning Disabilities. It was founded in 1981 under the guidance of Archbishop James Carney by the Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence, a congregation founded in 1881.
The Sisters at Vanspec offer Catholic catechetical instruction to children and adults who are challenged by intellectual or learning disabilities. There are special events throughout the year such as the annual Christmas party, Eucharistic celebrations, the yearly fundraiser dinner, special prayer and retreat days for instructors and parents. They also have a Parents’ Support Group.
There is also the annual Vanspec Summer Camp Program which is offered to students with the help of the Friends of Vanspec, an auxiliary group. Children and adults with disabilities are provided with a one-on-one counsellor.
