As the Graphic Designer for the Archdiocese of Vancouver, you are a crucial member of the Communications Office. Your role is to ensure that all visual content on print, web, and social media is engaging and effectively communicates the intended message. This involves laying out The B.C. Catholic Newspaper each week, a task that requires a keen eye for design and the ability to convey information that is visually appealing. Additionally, you are responsible for creating graphics for various brands and offices within the Archdiocese, such as Project Advance, Proclaim, Behold, and Gardens of Gethsemani. Mastery of the Adobe Suite, especially InDesign, is essential for this position, as it enables you to produce high-quality materials that meet the diverse needs of our audiences. 

Primary Responsibilities:

The B.C. Catholic 

  • Creates the layout for the weekly edition of The B.C. Catholic Newspaper, ensuring a visually engaging and coherent presentation of content. 
  • Coordinates with print and mailing houses about the newspaper's weekly needs, such as circulation and page numbers. 
  • Maintains parish subscription numbers for the Finance Office. 
  • Ensures a smooth flow throughout the publication cycle and informs the Editor if there are bottlenecks in each week’s production flow. 
  • Maintains the newspaper’s digital edition and text archives. 
  • Tags and labels photos of historical print editions, including unpublished photos, and upload them to the central photo database. 
  • Searches the Archives for historical photos as requested by the Editor. 
  • Designs, develops, and produces concepts for advertisers. 

Communications Projects 

  • Develops creative graphics and visual materials for print, web, and social media platforms, aligned with the Archdiocese's communication goals. 
  • Collaborates closely with the Communications team to conceptualize and implement visual strategies that enhance the Archdiocese's messaging and outreach efforts. 
  • Provides creative support for various Archdiocesan campaigns, events, and projects, from initial concept to final execution. 
  • Ensures brand consistency across all visual designs, adhering to Archdiocesan brand principles and standards. 
  • Incorporates text, photography, visuals, and illustrations by using software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Canva. 
  • Works with various ministry stakeholders to identify appropriate graphics, messaging ideas and elements. 
  • Coordinates with printers for paper stock and materials. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • At least 3 years' experience in design and layout. 
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially in Adobe InDesign. 
  • Education in graphic design, visual communications, or a related field is preferred. Relevant work experience is also considered. 
  • Meticulous attention to detail to ensure high-quality publications and digital content. 
  • Creativity to generate fresh, appealing visual concepts for various campaigns that resonate with diverse audiences. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines without compromising quality. 
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. 
  • Solid understanding of branding principles and the ability to maintain brand consistency across all visual designs for the Archdiocese and its various brands. 
  • Proficient in communicating concepts and design ideas, both verbally and in writing, to team members and stakeholders. 
  • Ability to gracefully accept feedback incorporate it into revisions that align with the vision and requirements of stakeholders. 
  • Good working knowledge of current issues and conditions affecting the Archdiocese of Vancouver and the Catholic Church. 

Conditions of Employment 

  • An active member of a Catholic parish.
  • Strong knowledge of Church teachings relevant to Archdiocesan offices.  
  • Successful Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search required prior to start of employment.

Working Environment

  • Salary: $52,000 - $65,000.00
  • This is a full-time position for a 13–18-month contract. Desired start date July 2024
  • Office hours are Monday to Friday with occasional evening work as required.
