What does it mean to be a Volunteer?
Outreach volunteers are the good Samaritans of today. They are significant, necessary and critical to Outreach and its vision because volunteers embody Christ’s compassion by bringing the love and tenderness to people. Volunteers concretize the parish’s philosophy, theology, spirit and practice of care and concern for people because volunteers make God real for others. By their accepting and non-critical care of the neighbour, volunteers impart Christ’s mercy, compassion, forgiveness and healing to others. Yet volunteers are often unaware of the motivation and implication of their willing gift of self to others. Rather, offering to freely donate oneself to care for the needy neighbour through a church based program is often the wordless expression of a person’s desire to be closer to God. Putting faith in action is a volunteer’s “yes” to a God who calls him or her to further thought and prayer through Christian service. Volunteerism is thus a call to holiness and a challenge to “put on Christ” so as to live a model compassionate care for people.
